This 50-140 Full-Frame Equivalent is 76mm-213mm focal length is a staple amongst event photographers. It’s low-light functionality variable telephoto length, and superb image sharpness rightfully place this lens amongst Fuji’s best “red-badge” lenses. Similar to Canon’s “L” or Sony’s “G-Master” lens line-up. However, this lens is not without compromise. The 50-140’s significant weight place it in a different class compared to the other APS-C peers. Plus, a full-frame camera also offers a shallower depth of field at Those using this lens for travel will be disappointed and happy. A weird conundrum, yes. The aperture will allow Shutter Speed and ISO changes in variable lighting such as cities. However, for the occasional wildlife shooter, 140mm feels too short. But at the same time, the 50-140 is one of the few regular telephoto zoom lenses by Fujifilm that is weather-sealed. What other Fujifilm lenses cover the 50-140 APS-C/76-213 FF equivalent? Is the XF 55-200 a worthy competitor? There are numerous other Fuji X lenses that cover the focal length of 50-140 some not mentioned here. However, the 50-140’s true competitors are lenses that span this length AND designed for similar styles of photography. So, here are a few lenses that have the same focal length as this one. Fujifilm XF 55-200mm XF 70-300mm Fujifilm XC 50-230mm Fujifilm XF 56mm XF 90mm F2 Additional telephoto zooms could come later. Recently, there has been an interest in some third-party Tamron especially zooms for the Fuji X Mount. Fujifilm 50-140 Sharpness As a zoom lens, we can expect variable sharpness throughout both the aperture AND focal length. However, here is what I discovered for this lens in my “official brick wall test.”1 Starting at around sharpness remains excellent throughout the entire zoom range. Kudos to Fujifilm for that. 2 The 50-140 appeared weaker at the short-end rather than the longer end. 3 The lens performs worst at expected. For the following example photos, I concentrated on the top-left portion of the photo with a crop factor of 80%. So, this is an extreme crop. Granted, I never zoom past 100% in any of my photos. However, the complex optical design is superb. Portrait Bokeh Out of focus rendering All around, I was not very impressed with the bokeh for portraiture. Out-of-focus rendering. I don’t quite know how to describe it, but the background almost looks busy. Let’s look at example 1 where the subject makes up about 30% of the entire frame. Fuji 50-140 And now example 2 with a subject that is approximately 10% of the frame. Yes, I masked out their face. Fujifilm 50-140 140 Person’s face omitted for privacy In both pictures, I see duplicates. Which is kind of weird. For example, let’s look at example 1, again. The sign on the left-hand side looks unnatural…almost as if I photoshopped a portrait of myself in front of a shaky, long-exposure. In example 2, the dog gives the illusion of the same phenomenon. Another note about this lens’s bokeh. I was not impressed with the “ look. For example… look at the crosswalk sign. It’s easily readable. Perhaps I am too picky in regards to bokeh from a 50-140 after all a 70-200 actually has shallower depth of field on a full-frame camera. Fujifilm 50-140 Bokeh Balls Fujifilm 50-140 Bokeh Beginning at you can see some cat’s eye within the bokeh balls. It almost begins in the left 1/3 of the frame. Cat’s eye isn’t a deal-breaker for most people, and stopping down does resolve the cat’s is also no onion ring effect! Fujifilm 50-140 Bokeh F4 Fujifilm 50-140 Bokeh In my tests, I found the Bokeh balls to round-out around F4 is usable & F8 is perfect. And it is fascinating that you do not see the beginning of the aperture blades, yet. However, in order to stop down to that I will either significantly either decrease my shutter speed or increase my ISO. For the X-T4, I attempt to avoid increasing my ISO past 4000 for all photos unless I am deliberately trying to introduce noise into the photo. Fujifilm 50-140 Bokeh F8 To give you an example of the bokeh balls in real-time, please see the video below. I was happy with this lens in regards to its ability to quickly switch between subject. And despite the colors of the mug, I found it to switch with relative struggled a bit with the blue mug. However, switching to the laptop case was almost immediate. For staged compositions like the one below, I didn’t have any problems. It locked on with relative ease, and I was able to take the photo. When it comes to Fujifilm and autofocus, it’s all about using the correct settings for the scene. For example, I could have used a focus-limiter too!It might be alright for some talking head shots. Macro Results and Focusing DistanceWith a maximum magnification of .12x, the macro results from this lens are less than spectacular. Plus, with a focusing distance of 1 meter feet, you will have to step back a bit before your subject comes into focus. In this hand-held! video, you can see how long it takes for the flower to become clear. Color Accuracy I was really happy with the colors rendered from this lens. The colors are accurate. The photo below DOES have some minimal processing. I brought out the shadows in the top-right, and I had to remove the pink reflection with a mask on the grey . 50mm F8 OIS Test Play Video about Fujifilm 50-140 Bokeh Test Video Handheld at around 90mm As somebody who uses the 16mm and 10-24mm, I am use to wobbling on most of the Fuji-X lenses. However, not with this one! The footage I obtained from this lens is some of the most usable footage I have ever gotten from a Fuji X Camera! For the video below, I had both the IBIS and OIS turned on. Side Note Anything older than the X-T3 except the X-H1 within this Fujifilm ecosystem does not have IBIS. Play Video about Fujifilm 50-140 OIS Test wX-T4 Sunstars/StarburstsI stopped down to F18 for the two photos below, and I was happy with the results. 50mm 10 seconds F18 All throughout the frame, I was able to achieve about a 14-point starburst image. Now, at F18, the image and lens will suffer heavily from diffraction. The lens only has a minimum aperture of F22. However, you can still create some awesome images. The roads in DC are horrible. Notice the up-and-down light-streak on the right. 50mm 10 seconds F18 Lens Flaring I am less than pleased with the flaring from this lens. But I had VERY high expectations. Although the photo is an extreme example as I shot directly into the light source, there are not a lot of easy ways to correct this in post-production. One way to attempt to salvage this is create a mask and pull down the highlights. Fujifilm 50-140 Alright, before we get into the final rating and notes, I wanted to provide a quick list of the pros and cons of this lens. Pros of the Fujifilm 50-140 The Fujifilm 50-140 is will be pleased with the results starting at IBIS/OIS provide great stabilization. The OIS and IBIS combination allows for some handheld video. Cons of the Fujifilm 50-140 Center of Gravity and WeightWeighing only pounds, the lens feels heavy as most Fuji X cameras do not have a significant grip. If you are using a tripod, you will be able to attach the lens to the tripod via the tripod collar. And the tripod collar does rotate!BokehThis might be a “me” thing, but I wasn’t impressed. PriceSince being released, the price has not changed from the $1,600 asking point. Except for certain rebates. Newer lenses within the same price-point have better the bright side, the filter size 72mm saves you about $10 compared to an 82mm. My Final Notes I might be expecting too much from this lens. However, for a premium price, I expect outstanding performance. If I was purchasing this lens today, I would instead focus on a telephoto zoom 70-300 and a prime within the same category for low-light work. The key differentiator between that prime lens and this 50-140 is the OIS, but with the money saved, I could still purchase a well-built gimbal. At the end of the day, each camera lens is limited in its output by the photographer. And I am probably not the best person to test this lens. But I was disappointed in the price/performance ratio. My Rating Price 3/5 Photography isn’t a cheap hobby, and I think the price is excessive. I could purchase the 70-300 AND a prime lens for the cost of this. Reliability 4/5 Paired with the X-T4 or X-T3, it is reliable and the autofocus is good enough for most occasions for photography. But for video, no. Plus, I don’t foresee any issues when it comes to build quality. This will deserve a re-test with the X-H2s. Spoiler alert It holds up, making this the best XF telephoto lens for videography. Functionality 4/5 When it comes to the 70-200 FF equivalent, this focal length is desirable and has utility. However, the points are deducted as the center of gravity prevents this lens from being held comfortably on most Fujifilm cameras. Style 4/5 Metal and well-built, the Fuji 50-140 is nice. HOWEVER, the metal body leaves fingerprints. -1 Point for always looking dirty. I highly recommand this lens as I have noticed it's sharper than my nikon lens was and so much lighter to carry. In testing I have found I need to add at least a stop and a half to my exposures for the best results. The X-T5 in my tests have been able to handle a plus 3 exposure with no loss of high ligth detailsA Great LensI have just got my new fuji 50-140mm lens. It's a great lens. Very sharp, a fast aperture, and a very useful focal length. This lens fits nisely between my walk about 16-80mm and my supertelephoto lens! This lens fully lives up to its reputation for great build quality, feel and sharp images. In my much earlier film shooting days, with Nikon cameras, one of my favorite lenses was the Nikkor 80 - 200 which was a very big and heavy lens but produced great images. In the APS format this Fuji lens is the approximate equivalent of that lens but is much more compact and lighter which I Sharpness - Optical PerfectionThis lens is amazing. I own the Canon EF 70-200mm IS II, and this is just as good, cheaper, lighter and with an outstandingly useful tripod foot/collar. I have all the fast fuji glass 90/f2; 60/ 56/ 35/ 23/ 16/ and 18/ so I know what the best images from Fuji kit look like. This is on a par with the best of them it shouldn't be given that its a zoom. It's a useful portrait and landscape lens. With my Canon 500D close up lens/dioptre, it's a great macro lens and what I really like about it is the clarity without the need for fill flash. This is the equivalent of the Canon, but so much easier and lighter to use - overall greater utility compared to the Canon. Professionally, I've shot weddings with the Canon lens, and halfway through, the weight really cripples your arm. The Fuji 50-140 feels like a featherweight by comparison and gives images that are just as pleasing. The smaller XT series cameras are the perfect match, and really help keep the weight down. On it's own, close focus is nothing special, but sharpness, speed, stabilisation, Weather resistance are stunning characteristics that make this special. Ignore what people say about this being heavy. It is not at all heavy compared to the competition, and balances well on XT bodies. You don't need a grip either as the tripod foot makes holding it very manageable. Build quality is outstanding. I can imagine it will really take what nature and my clumsiness throw at it. B&H service was amazing as always - I had it within a week, and I live in Adelaide, Australia, so full marks for service. Bottom line - buy this lens, you won't regret it. I have just bought the Fuji X-T5, so stabilisation on that body will be amazing, but the lens is also capable of stellar images on older bodies such as the X-T2 and X-T3, which are still competitive devices a hairs breadth beneath the current state-of-the have avoided zooms like the plague and ONLY carried primes. This is the first zoom that I have used that doesn't ask me to sacrifice something... speed, IQ, internal zoom etc. made. Beautiful class lens that is capable of making beautifully sharp, contrasty images with great color rendition. Buy images, internal zoom mechanicsA perfect lens for its focal length. The one knock is that the lens hood is UNBELIEVABLY cheap at awful. Barely attaches to the lens with a simple UV light filter. I would pay extra for an aftermarket metal lens hood if one legendary equipmentThis lens is one of my favorites because it just gets the shot whether the action is fast or slow. Being a bigger and heavier lens, however, I recommend using it with a battery grip that greatly improved comfort using it on my XT3. Optically this lens is razor sharp edge to edge with colors that pop and excellent subject separation throughout the range. It definitely has a sort of look to it that is hard to put my finger on, but I like it a lot. I find image quality peaks at about f/ or so. Wide open at f/ it is just a touch and I do mean touch softer with perhaps a little less contrast. Bokeh is excellent, but I have seen better sunstars. When this thing flares it flares in a pretty epic way. But in my case I've found it pleasing and tried to incorporate it into compositions. MFD is a lengthy three feet or so, typical for lenses like this and something I'd always prefer to be shorter. Hence it is a tad more constraining to use the lens indoors, though I do so a lot. Magnification is low, but this lens still pulls it off well when you zoom in all the way and add a crop - its that sharp. AF is excellent - other than the soft whir of the motors, or thunk when you switch it off, it is smoking fast. Even in poor light, I find this lens to be quick and virtually hunt proof - it just works. If only they were all like this. OIS is excellent - I've nailed focus at 1/15th all the way out to 140mm. OIS generally doesn't interfere with my action shots, but from time to time I do shut it off just to eliminate that possibility. It would be nice if it had a panning setting. Handling and feel of the lens is great - the aperture ring has strong, positive clicks, and the zoom ring is comfortable and fast. The manual focus ring is, IMO, too slow - even when I really rip on it, it seems to take its sweet time probably to aid precision, however. I love the metal build, but can note that it can get ripping hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter. Hence the broad rubber zoom ring is pretty important here. Tripod collar is easy to drop into portrait mode, and makes a useful hand grip. But it is a tad annoying to take on/off as it is a tight space - not to mention you better insure they aren't loose each time to use the lens. Lens hood on mine is wiggly, and never seated itself as easily as it should have - I eventually cross threaded mine in the moment, probably ruining it though it still works. It's a poor fit, in other words, not becoming of a $1,600 lens. Other than that the 75-214mm-ish range of this lens combined with its fantastic image quality and overall performance makes it a very rewarding to use despite its size, weight, or cost. On more than one occasion this has been my one lens choice for landscape, portrait, and action. Its high versatility and performance makes it in many ways a far better value than some other Fuji lenses cough, prime lenses, cough.YOUR RECENTLY VIEWED ITEMS I want to use this on an XH-1. The lens is just under 7 inches long, inches in diameter and it weighs in at a hefty You’re going to know you’re carrying this lens around. I used the lens with the X-S10. I wouldn’t say the combo balanced well, however, the tripod collar helped when it came to handling. Still, every cloud has a silver lining. The weight is due to the incredible materials that Fujifilm used to build this lens. The all-metal build makes this a tough lens that’s sure to stand the test of time. The lens also has ample weather sealing, which means you can go and party in the rain. It’s a serious piece of kit for those who have to get the shot no matter what. In the hand, the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ feels great. The aperture ring is firm and not easily knocked out of place. The small manual focus ring is on the stiff side but turns smoothly. The larger zoom ring is not as hard to turn and again, operates smoothly. There’s just one switch on the lens that enables or disables the optical image stabilization. The body of the lens is solid metal but there’s no texture. While it feels premium, the lack of texture means the lens is prone to unsightly smudges and fingerprints, which you can see in the image above. Overall, the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ R LM OIS WR is a solid lens that will stand the test of time. It feels nice in the hand despite its overall size and weight, which is on the large size in relation to the cameras it will be used with. Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ — In the field Most creators see these telephoto lenses as being for portrait photography. However, the zoom range on offer 76-213mm with the APS-C crop and the fast maximum aperture make this lens incredibly versatile. During my review period, I used the lens for portraits, environmental portraits, landscapes, candids, and more. Yes, the lens is one of the heavier offerings from Fujifilm, but you soon get used to the weight and size of the lens. I had no problems with it during a rather lengthy hike. The lens is pretty easy to use too. The aperture ring is great, though if you don’t like using it you can set it to A and can control the aperture via the camera body. The lens zooms internally so there’s no need to worry about lens creeping. The optical image stabilization is also pretty fantastic. It serves up five stops of stabilization. I was able to handhold down to 1/15th of a second and could still get respectable results. I didn’t get to test out the weather sealing due to having a non-weather sealed camera on hand. However, I do not doubt that this lens will stand up to harsh conditions. The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ R LM OIS WR is a confident performer out in the field. Fujifilm XF 50-140mm F/ — Autofocus performance I have used Fujifilm lenses that are rapid when it comes to autofocus speeds and Fujifilm lenses that are a little geriatric. The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ falls somewhere in the middle. The lens isn’t blazing fast, but it’s no slouch. There’s a lot of glass for the Triple Linear motors to move around, so the performance is about where I expected it to be. It’s going to be fine for all but the most rapid action. Still, having said that, I had no problems capturing portraits with eye focus, street-style shots, and candids. The lens performed well in single and continuous focus modes and it tracked well. There was a little hunting at times in low light situations but overall, autofocus performance was sprightly. Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ — Image quality In a word image quality is stunning. I thought the images looked good on the LCD of the X-S10, but wow, my jaw hit the ground when I started editing the images on both my iPad Pro and my desktop. The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ is a pricey lens, but you certainly get your money’s worth when it comes to the final product. Let’s break image quality down further. Distortion control and vignetting When it comes to distortions there’s some slight pincushion distortion that is present throughout the entire focal range. It’s not any better or worse at the short or long end. It stays consistent. It’s easy to fix during post, so that’s a plus. On a more positive note, there’s no vignetting to speak of here. Keep the lens correction profile turned on and you’ll have nothing to worry about. Ghosting, flaring and chromatic aberrations The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ does a good job when it comes to controlling flares when shooting directly into light sources and the large lens hood eliminates all flares when shooting with the sun off to the side. When it comes to ghosting, the XF 50-140mm has the same weird green dot issue that plagues many other Fujifilm lenses. You can see them between the tines of the sun stars in the image above. This will be somewhat of an issue if you shoot portraits with the sun behind your subject. You do also lose a little bit of contrast but it’s nothing major. There are no chromatic aberration issues to talk about either. I tested the lens in some pretty hard contrast scenes and I didn’t see any green or purple fringing. Sharpness The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ R LM OIS WR is up there with the sharpest lenses Fujifilm has on offer. The 56mm f/ and the 90mm f/2 are perhaps the sharpest Fujifilm lenses I have used, and the 50-140mm gives them a run for their money across the entire zoom range. The corners are perhaps a tad soft at f/ but you have to look to see it. Diffraction doesn’t become an issue until you get down to around f/11. This telephoto zoom is like having several primes in one. The performance is impressive. Bokeh Whether you’re shooting at the short or long end the bokeh is pleasing. This should come as no surprise. Telephoto lenses and the compression they offer do wonders for out-of-focus areas. When you combine compression with fast apertures you get magic. When shooting at the long end you can melt away backgrounds. Bokeh balls are pretty round in the center of the frame. There are some cat’s eye bokeh balls toward the edges and corners but they still look nice. If you shoot portraits or do product photography, you’ll love the bokeh that this lens can render. Color rendition How are the colors? Oh, baby! They’re gorgeous. You’re going to get bright, bold, beautiful colors that are perhaps a little more saturated than other lenses put out, but they look fantastic. The fall foliage in the images above really popped. The lens doesn’t lean toward the warm or cool end of the spectrum which is nice. It also renders pleasing skin tones, which is great seeing as many photographers will pick this lens up for portrait work. Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ is like multiple primes in one The Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ R LM OIS WR is not a new lens in the Fujifilm lineup, it is however a lens that all Fujifilm photographers should dream of owning. It’s that good. The lens is beyond sharp, it renders the most gorgeous colors and bokeh, it focuses fairly quickly and it’s accurate. Aside from some weird ghosting and the weight compared to the cameras it will attach to, it’s a joy to use. From a build quality standpoint, the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/ is one of the most well-built lenses Fujifilm puts out. The lens feels like a premium product and it’s weather-sealed to the nines. It’s an expensive lens at just under $1,600 but it’s worth it. If you shoot portraits, product photography, photojournalism or even landscapes, the XF 50-140mm f/ is a lens that will help you create jaw-dropping images.
